LVT vs Laminate: Which Flooring is Best for Your Home?

Choosing between Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) and laminate flooring can feel confusing — they both look great, cost less than hardwood, and promise durability. But the differences matter once you start living with them.

1. Water Resistance

Laminate:
Laminate is made mostly from compressed wood, so while it’s durable, it doesn’t like water. A big spill left for too long can cause the boards to swell or warp.

LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile):
LVT is completely waterproof. You can fit it in bathrooms, kitchens, and hallways without worry — perfect for homes with kids, pets, or wet shoes.

💡 Helpful tip: If you want one floor type throughout the whole house, including wet rooms, LVT is the safer choice.

2. Look and Feel

Laminate: It has a hard surface and a realistic wood grain texture printed on the top layer. It looks like real wood but feels slightly firmer underfoot.

LVT: Feels softer, warmer, and quieter. The top layer can mimic both wood and stone textures with incredible detail — sometimes it’s hard to tell it isn’t real.

💡 Helpful tip: Choose laminate for a crisp, wood-like texture; LVT if you want comfort and realism together.

Number 3: Durability and Maintenance

Laminate:
Very strong against scratches and dents — great for busy rooms or areas with furniture. But if it gets water-damaged, it usually needs replacing.

LVT:
More flexible and resilient; it resists scratches, water, and everyday wear. It’s easy to clean with a damp mop — no special products needed.

💡 Helpful tip: For high-traffic homes with pets or kids, LVT often lasts longer with less fuss.

Number 4:Installation and Subfloor

Laminate:
Uses a “click” system — the boards snap together and usually need underlay beneath. It must be fitted on a dry, level surface.

LVT:
Comes in click or glue-down styles. Click LVT installs like laminate but is more forgiving on uneven floors. Glue-down LVT is great for long-term stability.

💡 Helpful tip: If your floor isn’t perfectly smooth, LVT will handle it better.

5. Price and Value

Laminate:
Generally cheaper per square metre, making it budget-friendly for large rooms.

LVT:
Costs a little more, but you get waterproof protection, warmth, and long-term savings since it lasts longer in damp or busy areas.

💡 Helpful tip: Laminate wins for quick upgrades on a budget; LVT wins for comfort, waterproofing, and long-term durability.
